about

The 2008 debut by Lumerians. Originally only a run of 500 copies on clear vinyl in a clear PVC sleeve with vivid card insert artwork and self-released on the bands own Subterranean Elephants imprint, this is the first time it's been widely available for digital download. Lumerians began recording their debut release in 2007 with every intention of documenting the early guitar-based songs that comprised their live set up to that point. During the recording process, in an early primitive version of their New Telos studio, they became more interested in the impromptu divergences between takes, eventually eschewing all previously written material along with guitars, in favor of organ, synth, vibraphone and a Vietnamese mouth harp. Equal parts transmission and composition, the EP travels from the Silver-Apples-with-Phineas-Gage-syndrome noise and repetition of "Corkscrew Trepanation" and the time-collapsing, wormhole dub of "Turquoise Towers" on Side A to a kind of cough-syrup-Stereolab on "Orgon Grinder" and methodone vampire raga of "Olive Alley," before ending with the Golden Age b-studio horror melodrama meets Velvet Underground's "The Murder Mystery" of Triskaideka. Psych Rock in its loosest sense, yet undoubtably psychedelic, Lumerians opening statement is made without blues riffage, fuzz guitar, sun drunk idiot vocals, or any trapping of hippy cosplay.
